Double Steel Fire Door — Wide Opening Fire Protection for High-Traffic Areas

When your project requires fire protection across wide openings, Bastion's Double Steel Fire Door delivers. Designed for corridors, equipment rooms, and assembly occupancies where single doors cannot provide adequate clear width, our double door assemblies combine two UL listed steel door leaves within a single rated frame. Available in both active/leaf (one leaf operable) and both-active configurations, these doors maintain full fire ratings from 20 minutes to 3 hours while meeting egress width requirements for high-occupancy buildings. Each leaf is individually UL labeled, and the assembly is tested as a complete system.

    Product Highlights

    Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from buyers, contractors, and distributors

What is an astragal and why is it required on double fire doors? +
An astragal is a molding or strip attached to the meeting stile of one door leaf that overlaps the other leaf, sealing the gap between the two doors. On fire-rated pairs, the astragal must be UL listed and is critical to preventing fire and smoke from passing through the center gap. Without a proper astragal, the double door assembly does not meet NFPA 80 requirements and its fire rating is void.
What is a door coordinator and do I need one? +
A door coordinator (also called a selector) is a device that ensures the inactive leaf closes before the active leaf, so the astragal overlaps correctly and both leaves latch. Without a coordinator, the active leaf may close first, preventing the inactive leaf from seating properly. Per NFPA 80, coordinators are required on all fire-rated double doors where both leaves are equipped with latches. We factory-install coordinators on all double fire door pairs.
Can both leaves of a double fire door be active (operable)? +
In a standard double fire door, one leaf is active (operated by handle/panic hardware) and the other is inactive (secured by flush bolts, opened only for large items or full-width egress). Both leaves can be made active with "double active" hardware (two panic bars, no flush bolts), but this configuration must be specifically listed in the door's UL certification and is less common. Most code-compliant double fire doors use active/inactive configuration.
